Students and staff at Delta Academy came together this month to celebrate Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), transforming their school into a vibrant display of remembrance, culture, and community. The event, now in its second year, is part of an ongoing initiative to foster inclusion and celebrate diversity within the school’s culture.
The celebration centered around a colorful ofrenda table, a traditional altar honoring loved ones who have passed away. Covered in candles, handmade paper flowers, and meaningful decorations, the ofrenda invited students and staff to contribute photos, mementos, and favorite snacks or drinks of those they wished to remember.
The project was led by Mr. Max Boyso, a special education teacher at Delta Academy, who helped launch the initiative last year. “We wanted to find meaningful ways to celebrate both student and staff culture,” said Boyso. “Día de los Muertos is not only a beautiful Mexican tradition—it’s also an opportunity for everyone to learn, remember loved ones, and celebrate life together. It’s about building belonging and honoring the differences that make our community special.”
Jacquelyn Lopes, a student who helped create the ofrenda, said the experience was deeply meaningful. “It’s about bringing memories to life,” she shared. “People can feel happy seeing pictures of their family members, along with their favorite snacks and decorations. It’s very pretty—it makes you feel connected.”
The Día de los Muertos ofrenda project exemplifies Delta Academy’s mission to create an inclusive environment where every student feels seen and valued. Through cultural celebrations like this, students not only honor their own heritage but also learn about the traditions of their peers.
“This is about more than just decorations,” Boyso added. “It’s about creating a sense of belonging. We want our students to see that their culture and experiences are embraced and celebrated here.”
Delta Academy’s Día de los Muertos celebration continues to grow each year, reflecting the school’s dedication to diversity, cultural understanding, and community spirit.
