The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has recognized Darcy Walker with the Award of Special Recognition in the Classroom Teacher category as part of its 51st Annual Those Who Excel & Teacher of the Year Awards. Walker, known for her unwavering commitment to student success, will be honored at a statewide banquet on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at the Bloomington-Normal Marriott Hotel and Conference Center.
Walker, a dedicated educator who recently transitioned from Delta Academy to a leadership role as Dean at Hillcrest High School, was nominated by Delta Academy Director Erin Collins. Collins praised Walker as the driving force behind Delta Academy’s success, noting her tireless work ethic, high expectations for students, and endless contributions to the school’s initiatives and interventions. "Without Darcy Walker, Delta Academy would not be what it is today," Collins said.
Reflecting on the recognition, Walker shared, "Receiving this award for something I love doing every day is incredibly humbling. Teaching never feels like work to me—it feels like a passion and a privilege." Walker first learned about her nomination through an unexpected email and was thrilled to discover that her mentor, Erin Collins, had nominated her. "Working alongside Erin showed me the type of leader I aspire to be. Her example inspired me to pursue administration and lead with heart and purpose," Walker said.
Walker’s journey in education began at Bremen High School as an English teacher. When Delta Academy opened in 2019, she became a founding educator, helping build the alternative school from the ground up. During her tenure, she earned her master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a special education focus, and later, an administrative certification. Walker plans to continue her educational journey by pursuing a doctorate.
Delta Academy holds a special place in Walker’s heart. "Delta is an alternative setting, but for so many students, it’s a second chance," she explained. "The relationships we build with students go beyond academics. We get to know them as whole people, not just as learners. The bonds formed are deep and lasting."
Now serving as Dean at Hillcrest High School, Walker continues to embody the values of dedication, innovation, and compassion. She remains a proud advocate for District 228, praising the sense of family and excellence she witnesses across all schools in the district. "District 228 feels like home. Once you're here, you want to stay. It’s a community committed to doing amazing things for kids," she said.
Director Erin Collins summed up the district’s pride in Walker's achievement:
"I am so proud of the work that Darcy has done for the students and staff of District 228 already. This well-deserved recognition is a reflection of her unwavering dedication, passion for student success, and outstanding contributions to students and the learning community as a whole. Her Delta Drakes are always rooting for her as she continues to impact change on a broader scale."
The District and the entire school community congratulate Darcy Walker on this incredible and well-deserved honor.
