Hillcrest Grad Inspires Students
Cameron, a Hillcrest graduate of the class of 1991,
now a bilingual attorney, spoke recently to Hillcrest students about Law
School programs at Northern Illinois University. Students in Jim
Curtin's AP American History class and Tom Cappel's Honors Psychology
class responded very positively to her message. After
graduation from Illinois State University, Cameron, worked as a claims
adjuster for a few years before deciding to attend law school at Northern
Illinois. She now works for NIU's admissions office in the Minority
Outreach Program to inspire students to consider the law profession as a
career option. There are few minorities in law (9%). According
to History teacher Jim Curtin, The classes not only enjoyed her
presentation, but were also challenged by the description of the hard work
involved in the pursuit of becoming a lawyer.
Cameron credited her former Hillcrest Spanish teacher, Art
O’Connor, with inspiring
her to be a bilingual lawyer. To wrap up her presentation, Cameron gave
the students copies of the LSAT test, info on careers and prizes,
including Johnnie Cochran's book and posters.
