ASPIRE HIGHER
Stacked Roster Gives Hawks a Flight Schedule for Success
After an off-season spent raving about strength, quickness and maturity gains and intentions, the Hawks performance will have to outdo predictions. Our motto for the 2008-09 edition of HAWKS BASKETBALL is “Expectation and Execution—No Excuses No Explanations!” We have high aspirations. All we can do is play hard every day and take our opposition seriously and compete. We are fired up with big dreams and plenty of energy to chase them. For the Hawks, there are two symbiotic issues at play: Our defense’s ability to be a physically imposing force and the Hawks willingness to commit to TEAM basketball. Playing oppressive defense is an important component of this program’s success. But the best high school basketball teams need to be able to score. With four starters returning, the Hawks will be strong on the perimeter and both ends of the court. Uniquah Hampton (Jr.) and Juanita Robinson (Soph.), two All-Area performers, provide the Hawks the ability to push the ball at all times. Jacquenae Foster (Jr.), Kristin Marshall (Jr.) and Yolanda De La Torre (Soph.) gained valuable experience throughout the year and will be looking for break-out seasons. Seniors Ariel Rouse, Jamie Nelson, Erika Swain and Ashley Sloss will provide leadership and make sure players adhere to our motto. They will also need to provide more scoring than they did last season. They seem ready for the challenge. The Hawks return nine players from their rotation---82% of their scoring and 78% of their rebounding from the 2007-08 season.
Coach Maniatis’ Comments: We are extremely excited about the team we have coming back. We are going to be a formidable foe. When describing the 2008-09 edition of HAWK Basketball, these words come to mind: Balance, Depth, Experience, Versatility and the Hunger Factor over the 2007-08 season finish. It will be about the S-PLAN Standards, System, Stand and Savor. Our five goals established are 1.) Be a Team—Together Everyone Accomplishes More. 2.) Work to Dominate Your Opponent. 3.) Positively Affect Our Teammates. 4.) Individual Responsibility for Self-Determination. 5.) Be Champions On and Off the Court. We are going to be a good team---how good depends on the chemistry. We have created a sense of urgency with our team so that they know if they don’t play their roles; the job will not be accomplished. When they execute their responsibilities, they will share in the accolades. Our vision is for Hillcrest to build on its traditions and meet our expectations, while taking each contribution to higher levels of excellence. Our vision will ignite the fire of passion, which fuels our commitment to do whatever it takes to achieve our goals. We will continue to cherish our belief that every inspired drop of sweat and tears are an investment in our motto.
